  We brought our 6 mo kitten in for a neuter and 6 days later he died. It was an infection of the incisions that they had to make because one testicle hadn't dropped. We were given no antibiotics of any kind. We had paid $850 for this and of course they won't refund anything. It's just so shocking. Is this a good clinic? Maybe, but we checked with other vets after the fact and they have been saying that it's common to send any pet home with antibiotics after a surgery to fight off infection. I regret not knowing or insisting on this when we picked up our little guy.

  I have been going to Head to Tail Veterinary clinic for about a year. I began going to this clinic because I was fortunate enough to learn that my long time veterinarian surgeon, Dr. Hugh UpJohn, had begun working there. I was surprised and pleased to find that I also knew some of the staff now working at Head to Tail that had worked at his previous practice.

  Dr. UpJohn has looked after my rabbits, hampsters and birds for almost 20 years. He continues to provide the very best care for my avian companions which include a wide variety of species from young budgies to a very old Cockatoo.

  The clinic itself is very well run. It is exceptionally clean and organized. The staff are friendly, efficient and caring. I rarely get past the front desk without a staff member wanting to play with my 70 year old cockatoo (who never passes up a good patting). The staff have been welcoming right from the time I began to come to the clinic and they make me feel quite at home every time I visit. Some of them worked with Dr. UpJohn in his previous practice and are now working with him at Head to Tail. This says a great deal about his character, competence and how much he is respected by staff members.

  I very much value Dr. UpJohn’s efficiency, knowledge and experience. He constantly updates his knowledge. He makes full use of the experience of other veterinarians and information online to help treat difficult cases. He willingly shares his knowledge with other local and more distant veterinarians. He is a dedicated scientist but he can discuss cases with clients in comprehensible language.

  When it comes to guinea pig and rabbit dental he has to be the THE best in his field. Words can not explain how knowledgable and skilled that this man is at what he does.

  Dr. Upjohn is the most sincere, caring, and knowledgeable vet that I have ever entrusted with my bun. I have a senior bun, who needs dental work every three months. Dr. Upjohn is careful and considerate with his treatment, adjusting his anesthesia dosage/medication to avoid further risk and to make sure that he recovers out of it quickly. He also takes time to explain how the procedure went.

  Dr. UpJohn is very sharp when it comes to diagnosis and treatment options. He is conservative when it comes to medications so that the maximal benefit can be achieved with the minimum of treatment. Dr. UpJohn is able to treat animals with little, if any, testing which is much appreciated by clients.

  Having many guinea pigs over the years and losing one due to dental issues that were not addressed or treated correctly by several past vets and even dental specialists, I was scared when yet another one of my pigs came down with dental disease at a young age. A issue that THREE vets across Vancouver missed.

  Milo has a terminal dental disease, however so far he has had eleven more months of great quality life and he's still going strong. The only reason my lil one is still with me is because of Dr. Upjohn. The world needs more veterinarians like Dr Upjohn. Irreplaceable.

  Dr. UpJohn is a very enthusiastic, upbeat and kind person. I have always much appreciated his sense of integrity which is very evident in how he conducts his veterinary business. He takes a genuine interest in the animals that he treats. He always follows up on complex treatments by contacting clients the following day. He has treated some of my animals from the very beginning of life to the very end and has always been very supportive and encouraging throughout their lives.

  The staff at Head to Tail are friendly and helpful as well. Plus, the clinic is really reasonable with pricing. I pay around half what I was paying at a Vancouver clinic. Well worth the drive out to Maple Ridge!

  I can not recommend Dr Upjohn and Head To Tail enough. From my dogs knee surgery and allergy issues to my guinea pig issues, I do not trust anyone else with my animals.

  One time, when my bun sustained an injury, and I had to take him to the ER, I emailed Dr. Upjohn with what had happened, and what the ER vet had recommended as treatment. He took the time to call me the next day, on his day off, and speak to me about the course of treatment. A true testament to his character, and how much he cares.
